McKinney Fire Updates

8/15/2022 Update: With the downgrading of the evacuation warnings/orders on nearby zones, R-Ranch is ready to fully re-open! Woo hoo! As of 8/15/22, the pool is open, Headquarters office is open, and the campgrounds are open! The gun range will open on Wednesday, 8/17 for skeet and trap shooting only. The stables will re-open on Thursday for rides. The 3rd Gymkhana will be Saturday, 8/20/22 with sign-ups at 4pm (this replaces the overnight ride, and there are no trail rides on Saturday or Sunday this weekend since our horses will be in the Gymkhana). At this point we are optimistic that the rest of the activities and events planned for the year will be able to occur as scheduled. Come on back to R-Ranch, Pardners! #rranchhornbrook #rranchstrong

8/14/2022 Update: The McKinney Fire is 95% contained, and they finally finished the fire line between the ranch and the fire. With that in place, we are going to start re-opening the R-Ranch. The pool is OPEN. The gun range will OPEN on Wednesday for trap and skeet shooting only. The office at Headquarters is OPEN Monday-Saturday, 8-12, and 1-4 (closed 12-1 for lunch, and closed Sundays.)  We are cancelling the overnight ride for this weekend, and holding the 3rd Gymkhana in its’ place. The stables are still closed for trail and arena rides at this time. Please be patient with us as we try to get the mowing done. We are only allowed to mow before 10am each day due to continued fire danger. Thank you.

8/8/2022 Update: Due to the unpredictability of the fire, we have made the difficult decision to CANCEL all activities for this week and weekend also. ALL activities and events are cancelled through August 14th. Activities beyond that date are on hold. Our stables and gun range remain CLOSED. Our pool is OPEN. We really appreciate your understanding and patience while we navigate this ever-changing situation. Thank you.

8/6/22 Update: Due to red flag warning, CalFire has issued some additional evacuation warnings. R-Ranch property is still NOT on evacuation warning or orders at this time. However, the section that is now under warning is only 1.87 miles from the Ranch, so as a precaution we are moving the horses back to Klamath.
Attached is a screenshot from the Zonehaven evacuation maps. The lineshacks, wells, and equestrian trails are in Zone SIS-3303-B, which borders the area now on warning. The Stables and Headquarters are just over the line in SIS-3202, which borders a zone on evacuation order. We have marked the location of Headquarters and the Stables in blue.

8/6/22 Update: The McKinney fire is now 30% contained, and we were able to get the pool cleaned. Effective today, THE POOL IS OPEN! 🙂  The pool hours are 10am-10pm on Saturdays and Sundays, and 5pm-10pm on Monday-Friday.

8/5/2022 Update: Friday afternoon update: fire crews have pretty much contained the spot fires that were closer to the R-Ranch, and the McKinney fire has not been moving towards the ranch. We have moved the horses back to the stables for now, but are leaving everything set up at Klamath for them in case we need to move them again. The pool, office, stables, and gun range remain closed until further notice, but here’s hoping that we can get back to business as normal soon! Thank you for your continued patience.

8/2/2022 5:40pm Update: R-Ranch is still NOT on evacuation warning or order at this time. The McKinney fire is 56,165 acres, and additionally there is a smaller fire closer to the ranch called the Empire Fire. We continue to closely monitor the situation, and we are keeping the horses at Klamath since the air is better there and it is several miles away from the fires. Until further notice, Headquarters office is closed, the stables and trails are closed, the pool is closed, and the gun range is closed. All activities and events for this week are canceled, and the ones for next week are on hold, pending the action of the fires. Office work is being done remotely for now. Thank you for your understanding.

8/1/2022 12:45pm Update:  Please click here for the official letter to all owners regarding the McKinney Fire and Ranch Operations during this time. In short, all activities at the ranch are closed, and all events for the next week are canceled. Please see the letter for the full list.

8/1/2022 9:30am Update: The McKinney Fire has grown to 55,493 acres, but has not advanced much towards R-Ranch. We still are NOT on evacuation order or warning. We continue to keep our horses on the grass near Klamath Lodge for safety and health of the horses.

7/31/2022 7:30pm Update: Status remains the same. We still are NOT on warning or order for evacuation.  Due to poor air quality, we need to CANCEL horse camp this week. We are sorry for the inconvenience, but we have to consider the health and safety of our participants and our horses. Thank you for understanding.

7/31/2022 1:00pm Update: Our Ranch horses are happily munching on the grass by the Klamath Lodge. A temporary “electric fence” has been set up to contain the horses there. Moving them there will give us more time to get them to safety if evacuation becomes necessary. The Stables area is the closest part of R-Ranch to the fire, although the fire is still about 6 miles away. We still are NOT under order or warning for evacuation at this time.

7/31/2022 9:30am Update: The McKinney fire has grown to 51,648 acres, but has not advanced much towards the Ranch. We still are NOT in a zone for evacuation warning or order. CalFire is now tracking this as an incident if you would like to visit their website for more information.

7/31/2022 6:00am Update: R-Ranch is still NOT in a zone for evacuation warning or order.

7/30/2022 11:22pm Update: R-Ranch status remains the same. We are NOT on evacuation warning or order at this time. To keep our horses safe for the night, we have decided to relocate them to Klamath.  Here is the link for the Siskiyou Office of Emergency Services. https://www.facebook.com/SiskiyouCountyOES/

7/30/2022 8:00pm Update:This is the link to the evacuation warnings and orders map. R-Ranch is NOT under any warnings or orders at this time. For your information, Headquarters and the Stables are in SIS-3202 zone, Cottonwood Campground is in SIS-3205, and Klamath Campground and Gun Range are in SIS-3208.

7/30/2022 5:00pm Update: MCKINNEY FIRE UPDATE: The fire is still 7 miles away from the R-Ranch Stables area, with main spread of the fire moving away from us. (Cottonwood Campground and Klamath Campground are even farther away from the fire.) We are taking the precaution to have our horses gathered up in case we need to evacuate. Staff will be on hand all night to keep an eye on the situation. We continue to be in contact with CalFire. R-Ranch is NOT under any evacuation orders or warnings at this time.

7/30/2022 2:15pm Update: As many of you are seeing on the news, the McKinney fire is burning southwest of R-Ranch. We want to assure our owners that we are keeping a close watch on the situation and we are in contact with CalFire. At this time, the Ranch is not in danger and the fire is moving away from us. We do have our horses grouped to make evacuation run smoothly if needed, and we will update this post if the situation changes. The R-Ranch is not under an evacuation warning or order at this time.
